Oakland, California brought us Keyshia Cole in 1981. Cole rose to national prominence with her debut Album, titled ‘The Way It Is’ in 2005. She has also acted in television and movies. She released other albums only a few years later, called, ‘Just Like You’ and ‘A Different Me’. One of the most widely girl R&B singing groups period are the Pointer Sisters. The group who are blood related sisters, came on the music scene in the 1970′s and retained their musical prominence through the 1980′s, with several platinum albums. Two of the founding members, June and Bonnie Pointed, began singing in the clubs around Oakland, in the late 1960′s. Their younger sister Anita would eventually join the group. It was the three sisters that were in place as they started their illustrious recording career. Their first major record deal, was with Blue Thumb, then RCA and eventually Motown Records. The membership of the group would change over the years, as family demands and dynamics changed. Other sisters, Ruth Pointer and Issa Pointer, would drop in and out of the group. Some of the groups most successful singles were released in the 80′s. They were, ‘He’s So Shy’ and ‘Slow Hand’. Another song. ‘I’m So Excited’ became their trademark song for a while. They won three Grammy awards, the first in 1975 for the single, “Fairytale”. The next one was won in 1985 for “Jump” and the last Grammy was won the same year 1985 for the single, “Automatic”.
