The Big Apple has been serenaded by some of the biggest names in the history of music for decades now. Here are the top five songs about New York.

1. “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra. This anthem punctuates Yankee wins at the Stadium and trumpets the tough-mindedness of the New Yorker.

2. “New York State of Mind” by Billy Joel. Long Island’s favorite son wrote this classic upon returning from an extended trip west, celebrating New York as the place he feels most at home in the world.

3. “Across 110th Street” by Bobby Womack. This famous funk/soul number recalls the trials and tribulations of growing up in Harlem. It’s been featured prominently in classic films like Jackie Brown and American Gangster.

4. “The Rising” by Bruce Sprinsteen. Although some may not automatically recognize this as a New York anthem, it was a huge support to devastated New Yorkers in the wake of the 9/11 attacks; a song about dealing with the wreckage and rising again.

5. “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z. The most modern entry to the group could prove to be the longest lasting. One of the catchiest and most popular songs of all time.
